What is Sodium Hyaluronate Butyrate and what are its benefits?
As highlighted in another post, BMG’s efforts in modifying Sodium Hyaluronate has resulted in the creation of several synergistic fully biocompatible biomaterials and products that bring not only additional but exponential improvements to Sodium Hyaluronate. This post aims to explain the benefits and applications of one of these biocompatible biomaterials – Sodium Hyaluronate Butyrate (SHB).
Butyrate or butanoate is a biologically active short-chain fatty acid that regulates the inflammation process in the human body. Inflammation is an immune response, and controlling it helps to keep the immune system properly regulated. However, butyrate by itself has some limitations; it degrades quickly in the body and has a negative organoleptic profile which gives the body a bad smell.
BMG Pharma through its proprietary technology has created a novel way to link butyroyl residues at the level of the hydroxyl functions in Sodium Hyaluronate. This has resulted in the creation of a new biomaterial – Sodium Hyaluronate Butyrate (SHB) which has several benefits:
- The moisturizing effect of SH becomes longer-lasting due to the added resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis,
- SHB has enhanced anti-irritative and antioxidant activity,
- This biomaterial’s interaction with the lipidic moiety of the epidermis is boosted by improvements in lipophilicity of butyrate residues which means a more effective activity of sodium hyaluronate on the whole skin due to the butyrate residues.
- The bad odor of butyrate is removed as it is linked to the SH chain.
All these benefits are achieved while the features and benefits of both original molecules are kept, and shortcomings are eliminated.
This makes SHB the ideal ingredient in anti-aging formulations for stressed, aged or damaged skins. And with its unique features as a free radical scavenger, its overall effect is to preserve the most important endogenous hyaluronan molecule from degradation.
Stay tuned to learn about the benefits and applications of another one of our new biomaterials.
