What is inflammation and how does it cause damage?

Inflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells and substances they produce, like antibodies and antitoxins, protect us from infection by foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses.

However, in some diseases, like arthritis, the body’s defense system – the immune system – triggers an inflammatory response when there are no foreign invaders to fight off. In these diseases, called autoimmune diseases, the body’s normally protective immune system causes damage to its own tissues. The body responds as if normal tissues are infected or somehow abnormal.

Some, but not all types of arthritis are the result of misdirected inflammation. Arthritis is a general term that describes inflammation in the joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in the hands, knees, hips, and spine.

Treatment consists of self-care and therapy. Medications, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery can help reduce pain and maintain joint movement.

There are many drugs available to decrease joint pain, swelling, and inflammation, and possibly prevent or minimize the progression of the inflammatory disease. They are often used in combination due to their differing effects. The medications include:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen)
  • Corticosteroids (such as prednisone)
  • Antimalarial medications (such as hydroxychloroquine)
  • Other oral drugs are known as DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs), including methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide, azathioprine, and cyclophosphamide
  • Biologic drugs such as infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab, certolizumab, golimumab, abatacept, tocilizumab, and rituximab

Treatment and management of osteoarthritis with Moveox®

Alternative new medication for osteoarthritis is Moveox®, a novel botanical therapy which has been developed to reduce pain and increase mobility in this disease.

Moveox® is composed of plant extracts standardized for specific bioflavonoids from two botanicals with a long history of safe human consumption: Scutellaria baicalensis and Acacia catechu (Senegalia catechu). The medicinal extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis and Acacia catechu act as Dual Inhibitors of Cyclooxygenase and 5-Lipoxygenase to reduce inflammation. The Moveox® plant extracts are standardized for two distinct types of bioflavonoids that inhibit the pro-inflammatory enzymes COX and LO and to also neutralize inflammatory reactive oxygen species (ROS). This product also contains Vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation, helping the normal function of bones and cartilage.

Clinical studies conducted on 2192 patients prove the safety and efficacy of this herbal product. One of the studies examine the effects of a 1-week, daily supplementation with Moveox at 500 mg/day on the symptoms associated with Osteoarthritis as compared with a positive control treatment, Naproxen sodium 440 mg /day. The data shows that Moveox® and Naproxen both provided improvements in joint discomfort within 5 days and joint function within 7 days at the statistically significant level of <0.05 whilst Moveox® improved joint stiffness 2 days faster than Naproxen with statistical significance at day 3. Moveox® also out-performed Naproxen in the range of motion test, showing statistical significance within 7 days. Greater improvement in the 6-minute walk test was obtained with Moveox than with Naproxen.

Backed by science Moveox® can be considered as a great alternative treatment for managing patients with osteoarthritis. It can be also used in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) if needed for long-term control of the condition.
